Nairobi Baptist Church suspends senior pastor over sexual misconduct

A senior male church leader from the Nairobi Baptist Church has been suspended after investigations revealed that he was sexually assaulting young male members of the church. Sauce.co.ke reports

The leader, identified as Reverend Munengi Mulandi, was apparently non-apologetic when confronted by the church leadership, going as far as claiming that the sexual encounters were “therapeutic” to him.

The shocking revelations forced the church leadership to suspend the wolf who was feasting on his sheep.

In a statement released on August 3 by the church’s Elders Council, Rev. Mulandi’s role officially ended on June 1, 2025.

As the body of Christ, we are called to be holy and to uphold righteousness in line with the Word of God. We therefore share this statement with humility, compassion, and a sincere commitment to truth, justice, and transparency,” the statement reads in part.

Munengi Mulandi is no longer serving as the Senior Pastor of Nairobi Baptist Church, effective 1st June 2025, following serious allegations of misconduct. After careful review of his actions against biblical standards, they were deemed incompatible with the calling of a servant of Jesus Christ and the responsibilities of ordained pastoral ministry.

And now, in what many interpret as a PR attempt to sanitize the church, which is accused of having turned a blind eye to Mulandi’s ungodly behaviour, the church elders’ council has invited members for a meeting to discuss the issue on 17th August 2025 after the Sunday service (at 1:30pm).

Mulandi’s crimes came to light after one of his victims recorded him during an argument. After that, other victims also came forward.

When confronted by senior pastors and elders, he said it’s true he’s been doing it. Ati it’s therapeutic for him. Then he resigned,” said one angry church member.

Nairobi Baptist Church is one of Kenya’s most prominent evangelical congregations, with a legacy dating back to the 1950s.

At the time of going to press, Rev. Mulandi had not yet issued a comment or response regarding the church’s announcement.

It’s Not an Isolated Case – A Worrying Pattern Is Emerging

The Mulandi case is just one of several recent incidents exposing how church leaders and teachers with religious authority are preying on innocent worshippers and students, especially the young and vulnerable.

Alliance Girls High School – Peter Ayiro

Just weeks before the Nairobi Baptist scandal, former students of Alliance Girls High School staged a peaceful protest at the school, demanding the arrest and prosecution of Peter Ayiro, a Christian Union patron and teacher accused of predatory behaviour.

An explosive investigation by Africa Uncensored uncovered a decades-long pattern of alleged sexual misconduct and grooming by Ayiro. According to the report, Ayiro gained students’ trust as a spiritual guide, praised some girls as spiritually gifted, and made them emotionally dependent.

Several girls, both current and former students, spoke out about being groomed, manipulated, and touched inappropriately—some even claimed he pursued them long after they graduated.

The story also revealed that efforts were made to muzzle the investigation through court injunctions, and that Ayiro’s father runs a church in Nairobi. The matter sparked widespread public outrage, with many Kenyans calling out the institutional silence and cover-up by school and church officials.

Ruiru Church – Christ Impact Ministries

Earlier this year, in March 2025, another scandal broke out in Christ Impact Church in Ruiru, where a pastor was accused of sexual misconduct, this time involving young boys and fellow clergy.

What was meant to be a peaceful Sunday morning turned into a chaotic protest. A group calling themselves the “TikTok High Court” stormed the church during service, pelting stones, smashing worship instruments, and vandalizing property.

Please, bad pastors should stop hiding in churches,” said David James, one of the protesters.

Their anger was directed at the church leadership for failing to act despite repeated warnings and whispers. Days later, the pastor, Peter Kimondo Baragu, was arraigned in court for rape charges.

His alleged victim, a tuk-tuk driver, told police that he was given alcohol, lured into a van, and sexually assaulted.

Why These Incidents Matter — And What You Can Do

These stories, though shocking, are not rare. They reveal a growing crisis of spiritual abuse, where pastors, teachers, and church leaders misuse their power to exploit those who trust them most.

It is time for all institutions—schools, churches, ministries—to stop covering up abuse in the name of image or loyalty and instead stand for justice, transparency, and survivor safety.
